The neshama comes down to this world and joins the body which is made from dust of the earth (Adam-man, from adamah-earth). From here it goes out on its life journeys, “These are the journeys of the children of Israel” (Num. 33:1). The purpose of these journeys is to make amends for Adam’s sin, to sanctify matter and to infuse it with spirituality which is not only holy but which also sanctifies.
